Being Renewed and Renewed

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. (Acts 4:31).

A person of faith among non-believing coworkers can face misunderstandings, challenges to his or her values, or outright opposition. One’s lifestyles, convictions, and even “workstyle” can trigger such responses. It can be very draining, like swimming against the tide.

The new believers in Acts felt stress, too. They encountered the arrest of their leaders (Acts 4:1-3), rage and plots against them (4:25), and threats (4:21, 29). In response, they prayed together and were filled with the Holy Spirit yet again (4:31). They previous filling (2:4) needed to be renewed.

As modern-day believers we, too, face the drain of unfriendly encounters in our lives and work. Like the Christians in Acts, we need to gather regularly for spiritual refueling. Worship services and small groups can provide that essential element, supplying the power we need to follow Christ in this world.

Consider gathering a small group of believers at your job or in your neighborhood to pray together and talk about life in Christ, or consider joining a business small group with others of like-mind.
