I appeal to you for…Onesimus, who formerly was useless to you, but now is useful both to you and to me. (Philemon vv. 10-11).
When Paul wrote to Philemon on behalf of the slave Onesimus, whom he was returning to his lawful place, he suggests that this formerly “useless” young man had been transformed into a valuable asset by his conversion to the truth.
Before you release an employee for unsatisfactory performance, take a good look at yourself first. Did you give proper training for the job? Were your expectations clear and were the necessary resources available for the job to be done well? Did you give constructive feedback when improvements were needed?
Make every effort to “cut and polish” a diamond-in-the-rough before you terminate his or her employment. In doing so, you may uncover a valuable human resource for your business plus you may have a tremendous impact on helping a human being grow.
