Excellent Traits From Tiny Creatures
There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise: The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer; the rock badgers are a feeble folk, yet they make their homes in the crags; the locusts have no king, yet they all advance in ranks; the spider skillfully grasps with its hands, and it is in kings’ palaces. (Proverbs 30: 24-28)
The earth is full of small, virtually unnoticed creatures. Yet Agur studied four inconspicuous species and found in them attractive traits that display wisdom:
1) The tiny ants plan in advance for the long winter months by storing up food in the summer (Prov. 30:25)
2) Rock badgers build secure nests in the strongholds of rocks (Prov. 30:26)
3) Locusts stick together and move in unison even without an obvious leader (Prov. 30:27)
4) Spiders do their skillful work in king’s palaces (Prov. 30:28)
Foresight and planning, safe building, teamwork, and excellence are valuable traits. If tiny creatures such as these exhibit such qualities, how much more should human beings, who have been created in God’s image? Reflecting on these creatures, we do well to ask: In what ways do we need to improve our work?
