Are You a Team Player? (Nehemiah 3:1-32)
Modern Western culture tends to value independence and celebrates solo performers. Yet most of the great accomplishments in the world are the result of coordinated teamwork in which many dedicated people pull together. The reconstruction of Jerusalem’s wall was that kind of team effort. Notice how many times the words “next to” are used in Neh. 3.
Wherever people come together to accomplish meaningful tasks, coordination and cooperation are necessary if they want to see successful results. Whatever each member does affects everyone else on the team. That means that everyone is accountable to the team for his or her performance.
Are you a member of a team where you work? How about your family? Your community? Your church? Wherever you find yourself “next to” others, consider the ways in which you impact their lives and efforts. What kind of impact are you making? Scripture gives you some important guidelines at Matt. 5:16, Gal. 6:10, and Heb. 10:24.
